Weather for France is primarily moderate throughout the country, although the seasons and regions can vary significantly. The south and west coasts have a warm and sunny Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. Inland areas have a more continental climate, with cooler temperatures, though they also experience comparatively milder winters and some precipitation throughout the year.

In central and eastern parts of the country, weather conditions can fluctuate dramatically within a small region due to changes in topography and proximity to mountain ranges and river valleys. Paris is a good example of this; it is a cool city with fairly moderate temperature throughout the year, but rain can be heavy in fall and winter.

As you head further inland, especially toward the Dordogne region and beyond, weather patterns become more varied as well. For instance, the central eastern city of Dijon is a city with a semi-continental climate; it can be hot and humid in summer and quite cold and frosty in winter.

Moving even further inland, the climate becomes more typical of a Mediterranean region. Bordeaux, for example, is a city with a hot and dry summer but it experiences comparatively moderate temperatures in winter and high levels of rainfall. So it’s a good idea to bring along appropriate clothing for every season, but also remember that the weather can change dramatically from one area to another. This means that you should always keep a waterproof jacket and closed-toed shoes in your bag, just in case!
